THE JOURNAL & ITS PUBLISHER
A focused journal.
A wider scientific ambition.
Consciousness: Models & Mechanisms is the first journal in the FIELD Atlas Publishing programme.
Journal profile
CMM is a journal of mathematical theory, computation, and experiment on conscious experience and its mechanisms. Explicit mathematical and computational models form its organizing principle. We publish model construction, analysis, and comparison, and empirical studies that test models, constrain their parameters, or distinguish their predictions.
The research-level FIELD Atlas book, Consciousness — Problems, models and the architecture of evidence, illustrates the kind of sustained engagement with formal models, measurement, mechanisms, and discriminating evidence that informs the journal’s scope. The journal welcomes independent and competing theoretical contributions.

The editor-in-chief serves anonymously. The identity of that role is not part of the public editorial directory. A small group of acting editors will be named on this site when appointed and authorized for publication; their remit is to verify consequential review findings, adjudicate disagreements, and uphold the editorial process.
Acting editors
Appointments will be announced here. No acting editor names are published in this prelaunch edition.
Editorial correspondence is handled through the journal office. Authorship, financial interests, and personal relationships must be disclosed when relevant to a manuscript; cases requiring recusal will be assigned without the conflicted person participating in the decision. The detailed governance and appeal protocol are in preparation.
Open access & cost-based publishing
FIELD Atlas Publishing’s stated aim is Gold Open Access: published journal articles are freely readable, with publication charges based on measured production and operating costs rather than an editorial profit margin. Efficient AI-assisted review is part of that strategy. The final fee schedule, waiver policy, license, and rights agreement have not yet been established.
No ISSN, DOI registration, indexing status, publication schedule, or impact metric is claimed in this prelaunch edition. These details will be updated only when established.
